Case Study of Distant EFT Work with a Human and Her Canine Companion, In Progress, Winter 2011
I was originally asked by a new client on the East coast to work with her canine companion, a six-year old Collie-Husky female who has had epilepsy for three years and is at risk of death if one of her siezures lasts as long as five minutes. Although EFT came to be at the forefront of our healing work, I combined it with distant (second level) Reiki as a calming and centering technique, as well as with animal communication with the dog both in the phone sessions with her human and in one-on-one sessions directly. I soon discovered that Rover was an exceptional being, exhibiting a high level of "emotional intelligence," courage, and compassion for the world's devastating suffering.
As always, I also used "medical intuition," defined as determining the telelogical purpose that Rover contracted epilepsy. Aristotle famously distinguished between the 'proximate cause' of an event or condition--or the material causal factor that resulted in it, and its 'teleological cause'--or its underlying purpose. For example, there are widely accepted proximate causes for menopause (e.g., hormonal changes), or more generally for the midlife crises faced by men and women (and animals as well). There is also a teleological cause, as reflected in the famous statement by Carl Jung that he never had a client with presenting midlife symptoms whose real issue wasn’t a psychospiritual crisis.
The presupposition of medical intuition is that every ailment - every instance of dis-ease - comes to us as a teacher rather than randomly or meaninglessly. Often there is an elegant relationship between the ailment and its teaching, as when heart disease is a wakeup call regarding blocked grief or heartache. A second, related presupposition is that finding and addressing the underlying teaching will help to heal the ailment. In my experience even seemingly intractable illnesses such as AIDS or advanced cancer have simply disappeared after their message has been attended to and integrated (see testimonials by clicking here and here).*
With Rover, therefore, I did intutitive work to discern whether 1 ) over and above the physical disease etiology of canine epilepsy there are root teleological causes, or at least contributors, also at work; and 2 ) if so, how could the disease be helped by addressing these factors? Despair over the fate of our planet immediately revealed itself as a root cause: rather than being felt fully as the heart-breaking feeling that it is, it was acting out in Rover's body. And symbolically, the violent epileptic siezures were an unconscious protest against the evil doers who have perpetrated so much of our world's suffering.
Not only would feeling and processing her despair help Rover's epilepsy, but intuition also revealed that of key benefit would be her performing service work so as to do her own small part to alleviate overall suffering. I was thrilled to learn that Rover was a certified therapy dog, whose person had stopped her service work because she thought it would be overly stressful and thus increase the risk of siezures. Just the opposite! Rover and her person made a visit to a nursing home the following week, and Rover signed up as an ongoing consultant to assist me in my healing assignments, starting with a dog in the Midwest who had developed a large mysterious mass with open lesions across the top of his nose. (This case was resolved successfully: click here.)
In addition to these measures, Rover's person signed on to doing daily EFT with Rover on eight issues that would help Rover to integrate what we had learned in the intuitive work, including needing to feel her specific feelings of despair (e.g., over the onging loss of the rainforest); needing to remember that siezures were of no use whatsoever as a form of protest and indeed diminished her fitness to serve; and needing to be of service in whatever capacity she could without overdoing it.
We also discovered that there were early warning signs of an imminent siezure and that a timely EFT session was able to prevent it. After initial coaching by me in phone sessions, Rover's person learned to do this preemptive EFT on her own. The daily tapping on the eight basic issues was also paying off, and a later status check by me indicated that the epilepsy was indeed becoming less severe.
As a result of these various measures, Rover remained free of siezures for over a month, and even went on a three-day holiday by car without any mishaps. But suddenly she had two siezures in a row, with the second one being longer than usual and scaring the daylights out of her person. Two actions were called for: 1) an EFT phone session in which both Rover and her person reduced their off the charts fear of the onset of another seizure to zero, and were able to get a peaceul night's sleep; and 2) a distant session between me and Rover the following morning to try to get to the bottom of the sudden regression to Rover's previous condition. Before looking into what emotional factors, or teleological purposes, may have entered into the two recent siezures, we did a long EFT session to remove Rover's profound discouragement and doubt that grace was even available (see below for a fascinating summary of this session and the wisdom it yielded). Next we addressed the siezures themselves, and discovered that their root purpose no longer related primariy to Rover's own despair, but also to her person's. The revealed remedy accordingly expanded its focus: two EFT phone sessions a week for addressing her person's distress, starting with the same deep nihilism that afflicted Rover after those two violent siezures.
In my past healing experience with both animals and people I have seen this phenomenon before: an affliction will come with one teaching or purpose at the outset, and will later supplement or even change that wakeup call to another one before it is healed. In other words, the same affliction gets our attention regarding successive teachings. For a fascinating example, see Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom by Christiane Northrup, M.D., who spent three years tuning into the ongoing teachings of her fibroid tumors, which changed her life entirely. A related phomomenon, called the rotating illness syndrome, is that an ailment may be removed before its teaching or message is integrated fully (e.g., the surgical removal of fibroid tumors), so the wake up call will manifest as another ailment to achieve its purpose! In this case, rather than one ailment serving successive purposes, the same purpose is served by successive ailments.
I find it especially elegant that the new purpose of Rover's epilepsy, bringing attention to her person's despair, is providing a progressive healing of Rover's despair, in two ways: 1) Rover's illness has been of service in motivating her person to undertake her own healing work; and 2) in that process Rover is acting as a consultant and will thus have a service role on an ongoing basis. THE EFT SESSION ON ROVER'S DOUBT THERE IS GRACE
Initial rating of the dIstress on a scale of 1 to 10 / the "Subjective Units of Distress" (SUDS): 10 .
Blockages to EFT Effectiveness / "Psychological Reversal"s (PRs): 1) deep level doubt that EFT will help (removed by tapping under the nose); 2) not feeling worthy of help (tapped at KC); 3) the "Inner Predator" (the Negative Mother complex) wants to thwart our success (tapped at KC). Self-muscle testing showed these PRs were eliminated.
ROUND ONE OF THE EFT TAPPING ON 'Doubt there is grace': It came out that the doubt there is grace is doubt there is any hope for Rover’s spiritual well-being; and also that the doubt is not solely whether grace exists but also whether Rover can be a conduit for it. The SUDS went down to 8.
ROUND TWO ON 'Remaining doubt' (we first removed the same 3 PRs, which had crept back in): it came out that Rover is distressed that so many have to suffer so deeply / and wonders why she has to suffer so deeply, i.e., she feels like St. John of the Cross when he thought his unspeakable suffering during his imprisonment was unfair in light of his saintliness, when he thought maybe God was cruel or at the very least that He did not love him; then Rover saw that she needed to tune into Judy’s long history of looking into this issue and finding that a being like Rover suffers so as to 1) become stronger; 2) become qualified to be a pathfinder; and 3) loosen her attachments to this temporal world; then she saw that seeing all this was itself grace-full! Her SUDS went down to 6.
ROUND THREE ON 'Remaining doubt' (we removed the same 3 PRs): it came out that Rover saw that it is normal to have doubt on such a dark planet as ours, it is normal not believe every moment that there is a Divine Embrace, that there is only Love; thus we have to go on blind faith and trust / we have to choose to trust so that we can go on, so that we can go on in a state of grace. Her SUDS went down to 4.
N.B.: We got the intuition that we should switch the EFT to the related issue of it seeming unfair to suffer that came up earlier; this would help to remove the remaining doubt.
ROUND FOUR ON 'The seeming unfairness of Rover’s suffering': again it came out, with more detail , that there is a sacred purpose in Rover’s suffering: 1) to get stronger (just as a leather hide gets stronger when tanned with acid); 2) to earn credentials as a pathfinder, which comprise empathy with others’ suffering, authenticity via experiencing oneself that same suffering, and the wisdom that comes from suffering; and 3) to loosen attachments: this planet, i.e., Gaia herself plus all her life forms, must have “signed up” on a soul level for all this suffering / it is God’s Plan / who are we to judge this sacred Plan / who are we to demand to know the whats and whys of God’s Plan??
Rover’s SUDS on her doubt there is grace went to zero!

FIRST SESSION WITH ROVER'S PERSON 10/01/11
We reviewed the above case study together, remarking how complex (and elegant) the medical intuition model is and also how EFT becomes an intuitive art form once its intricacies are integrated with practice. We did a brief intake, e.g., regarding any medical diagnoses and medications (there are none), what support systems are in place (human, animal, and spiritual), and other clinical resources (a counselor and an EMDR practitioner). Given that EFT works best on specifics, the client agreed to make a list of concrete events in her past that had evoked despair (similar to the Vietnam vets depicted in the EFT classic Nine Days at the VA, who at the outset identified the concrete memories that constituted their PTSD). She also agreed to make a list of all her issues of chronic distress so that that she might do EFT with them on a daily basis so as to chip away at them gradually. Btoh the client and her canine consultant were happy with this initial preparatory session and excited about starting the actual EFT on October 4.
SECOND SESSION, 10/04/11

Judy asked her client which despair-inducing past event she’d like to begin with. Because it had been arranged for her to work with an EMDR practitioner on her car accident and then on the death of a beloved dog, the announcement of the client’s parents’ separation, when she was 11, was chosen instead. Judy decided to use the proven PTSD technique called the EFT “Narrative Technique,” using “Mom’s Bombshell” as the name of this event. The client’s first distress was felt at the moment her mom told her and her two brothers that she needed to talk with them; given previous evidence of parental discord, she felt nauseating anticipatory fear. This was sufficiently diminished with one round of tapping on “this fear in my stomach.” The next afflictive feeling was felt when, after sitting to talk, mom announced that she and her husband had not been getting along. The client suspected this meant they would no longer be able to afford to stay in their current home, which made her sad. That sadness was, with one round, sufficiently diminished for her to proceed with the narrative. But technical / phone issues ended the session at that point.
In the next session, the narrative technique will resume, starting at the story’s beginning to be sure that the anticipatory fear and sadness have not crept back in the interim.
THIRD SESSION, 10/14/11
We did not continue as planned because my client had been stricken with a horrendous flu. Medical Intuition revealed that its wake up call was her despair over her most trusted friend, Rover, who had recently shown signs of a siezure af-ter my client had forgotten to give her her daily epilepsy medicine. The despair was exacerbated by her forgetting her last scheduled session with me, whom she saw as her main instrument of help for her and her dog. More generally, the flu reflected a state of overwhelm by life, in the last analysis caused by the demon of darkness who rejoices in pushing people over the edge into total overwhelm when they are confronted with huge life challenges. The flu's healing mo-dality revealed itself to be EFT with the assistance of Rover, who could help her person to fight Satan just as my horse Alex had helped me when he was alive.
Thus we began EFT on 'overwhelm caused by Satan', with an initial SUDs of 9. We removed my client's Psychological Reversals (PRs) of 1) deep level doubt; and 2) feeling that she could not do what was necessary to clear the overwhelm (a tautology!) During Round One Rover intuited that she has what it takes to help her person to counter assaults by Sat-an. I intuited that Satan hates himself so much and is in so much torment that he spills it out all over. I also got the word "mother" as an aspect of the overwhelm issue.
After Round One the client's SUDs was down to 5. In Round Two I again got the word "mother" and Rover got "my per-son's mother." Her person revealed that when she was a child, her father was an active alcoholic and her mother was emotionally dead with her three children, with the exception of chronic anger which she acted out constantly. I pointed out that we all project onto our concept of God our experience with our earliest caregivers, which resonated with my client; if her mother had been emotionally unavailable and untrustworthy, then unconsciously she would find it hard to trust God, would try to handles life's challenges on her own rather than with His help, and would consequently go into states of overwelm. I intuited that we should switch our EFT to 'Mom's anger', which would help reduce the SUDs of our original tappable issue. We arbitrarily set the SUDs for this aspect at 10, since the client was not yet fully in touch with her feelings around it. As coach, the phrases that came to me as variations on the theme of 'Mom 's anger' includ-ed 'all these repercussions coming to the surface', 'all this baggage coming up', the 'torment of having been unmoth-ered', the 'anger being felt toward Mom as a result', the 'okayness of feeling that anger'. Most important, the word 'chosen' came to me, and my client and I discussed how her healing her childhood wounds would enhance her service with the elderly in her jobs at nursing homes. We discussed the myth of the orphaned Stone Child, who was finally ab-le to cry and whose hot tears broke the stone open, revealing the Divine Mother and Father dwelling inside. The sac-red purpose of the Stone Child's early wounds was to make him very very strong as a prerequisite of himself becoming a healer.
After the first round on 'Mom's anger' the SUDs for that issue went down to 4 and the SUDs for 'overwhelm' had ipso fac-to gone down to a 3. During the second round on 'Mom's anger" all three of us felt the sadness of being unmothered; it also came out that this was a big part of my client's feeling she has to do everything herself and therefore feeling over-whelmed--thus her grief was good grief in motivating her to turn to God for help!
After this second round the SUDs on the original issue was down to a 1, and since we had gone over the alloted time by 30 minutes it was decided that the client should use EFT on her own to reduce it to zero. She also agreed to finish her list of daily tappable "global" issues and begin tapping on those one or more times/day.
The EFT work with my client soon began to incorporate her Inner Child, as the carrier of both conscious and buried feelings and "baggage." Her canine companion had already begun her own "Inner Youngster" work as a means of addressting the trauma of having developed epilepsy at the age of two. She had also been pivotal in helping her person with healing her emotional distress. Thus it was not surprising that after my client had completed my distant learning class in Animal Communication, she and Rover came to the decision to embark upon the powerful healing framework known as Human / Companion Animal Co-Healing. They are engaged in this work in bi-weekly sessions with me as a coach and in interim sessions on their own. The results so far have been extraordinary.
